Mini Flap Discs vs. Quick-Lock Discs: Understanding the Differences

Choosing the Right Type of Quick Change Disc

When it comes to metalworking, using the right type of abrasive disc is crucial to achieving your desired result and finish. Two popular types of Quick-Change Abrasive Discs are Mini Flap Discs and Quick Lock Coated Abrasive Discs. Although both are used for metalworking, they have different applications and functions.

In this article, we will explain the differences between Flap Discs and Quick-Lock Discs, and which is better suited for your specific application.

What Are Mini Flap Discs & What Are They Used For?

A Flap Disc is a circular abrasive disc made of multiple overlapping cloth flaps, which are coated with abrasive grain. The flaps are designed to wear away gradually, exposing new abrasive material. Flap Discs are used for grinding, blending, and finishing, as well as removing rust, paint, and welding seams. Preferred Abrasives offer them in two industry-standard connections: Type S and Type R. Type R discs are used with conventional rubber back-up pads. Type S discs are used with a reusable threaded steel shaft.

A key advantage of Mini Flap Discs is that the multi-layer design provides a significantly longer lifespan than a single layer Quick-Lock Disc. Additionally, their small sizes allow access to confined areas and corners to remove material more efficiently because the outer edge of the disc is also effective at removing unwanted material.

What Are Quick-Lock Discs & What Are They Used For?

Most Quick-Lock Discs, also known as Quick-Change Discs, are constructed by laminating abrasive cloth to a cloth backing material. This 2-ply design improves durability and reduces edge wear. The discs attach to a rubber holder via a plastic or metal fastener, which has been permanently attached to the backing cloth. Preferred Abrasives offers them in two industry standard attachments: Type S and Type R. Both systems allow the discs to be run at high RPMs. The attachments are quite secure, even when subjected to the high heat that can be generated while grinding.

Both style discs are designed with a button on the reverse side that allows the operator to change discs efficiently, without the need of any special tools. These discs allow for quick stock removal on both flat and contoured material.

In Summary

Flap Discs and Quick-Lock Discs are both ideal for flat surfaces and sharp edges. The extended life of a Mini Flap Disc can save significant resources, with one Flap Disc often lasting as long as 10 Coated Abrasive Discs. Both disc types feature quick change versatility and can handle high RPMs for fast stock material removal.
